Amazon explore friends orders

Social graphs where they don't belong

I remember back in the old days when you had to order a package and wait a week or more for it to arrive. Amazon’s ruthless commitment to customer satisfaction has rapidly decreased that time to only a few hours if you live in a large city. It’s wild how much they transformed customer expectations around shipping.

Prime is something I have had for so long I almost can’t imagine living without it now. My wife and I use it all the time. My wife also uses it for work. This account is shared with many of her coworkers. A few months back, one of her coworkers (who it is we’re not quite sure) ordered some… extremely personal items that could be seen by anyone who had access to the order history.

No one ended up discussing it much, but this interaction has stewed in the back of my mind for a while now. As I was using Amazon recently I wondered… what would it look like for your order history to be public to friends and family.

Given Amazon’s recent testing of a Tik-Tok style discovery page, this isn’t as outlandish as it seems. Yes, you would want privacy for certain purchases (like hemorrhoid cream) but there may be some sort of social sharing incentive in the future. TikTok is slowly starting to eat away at Amazon’s dominance in commerce, and they need to find a way around that.
