Apple Health estimated death date based on walking activity
Stomp out of an early grave
Happy Monday everyone. Many of you are likely aware that I am the cofounder of a step-tracking app called Stompers. It’s a lightweight way to track steps with friends.
At the beginning of this year, I started to focus more on my health, this means I sleep more, eat normal-ish foods, lift weights, and walk a lot. I’ve been better about averaging 6-8k steps a day and while yes, it’s shy of 10,000, it’s markedly better than the 500-1,000 I was hitting last year.
This got me thinking about the chart below, which shows a correlation between steps taken and life expectancy. I’m not a data scientist so I don’t know if correlation = causation, but this is still a fascinating piece of data.
This got me thinking about Apple Health, which shows a relatively detailed breakdown of your average step count. What if the app showed your predicted life expectancy correlating to your overall activity?
For some, this would be simply depressing, but for others, it would be a horrifying motivator to get moving. Given the advent of generative code, it would be pretty easy to spin up an app like this with Cursor and Claude, someone should build it!
