Chase credit card roulette

Never tell me the odds

Credit cards are simultaneously one of mankind’s best and worst creations. On one hand, the ability to summon capital out of thin air is awesome. However, if you get too excited about how awesome it is, it’s easy to spend a lot of money fast. Something is grounding about paying with real cash that gets lost with digital money, at least for me.

I’ve never been to Vegas, but I’ve heard there’s a game that gets played sometimes when people go out called credit card roulette. The concept is simple: everyone puts their charges on one giant tab and a random card is selected to foot the bill. This is a great way to get either an amazing night for free or a horrible credit card balance.

This got me thinking… why should this experience be limited to on transaction, or to people you know? Imagine if you were able to play credit card roulette every month with strangers. You could see an experience within the Chase app where you are prompted to play roulette if your bill gets too high.

The game mechanics here are extremely important. If everyone can play, it’s likely a lot of people would go into massive debt and assume someone else can foot the bill. This would be fun to run as a small A/B test if only to understand how people behave when relying on or punishing others financially. My guess is it wouldn’t be pretty.
