DoorDash no tip guilt trip
The walk of shame
When I order on DoorDash, I usually tip the suggested amount of a little more. I’m not going to get into the etiquette of tipping at restaurants, but I will plant my flag that dashing is a tough job and the drivers deserve to be tipped. You’re juggling traffic, restaurant staff, and hungry customers all over a city. It seems tough. Not tipping feels criminal.
This got me thinking about ways to enforce tipping through social accountability. I know apps like this already have scores and metrics viewable by drivers, but what if we took it one step further and punished people who leave bad tips (or no tip)?
You can imagine a feature where, after placing your order, there’s a notice that DoorDash will notify all of your contacts since you didn't tip. However, there could be an escape hatch if you leave a tip within a certain time.
I don’t think this is the right implementation, but I do think there’s some value to being able to enforce/encourage a higher level of tipping for apps where gig workers are putting in a lot of effort.
