DoorDash programmatic upsell

Based on your hourly wages

According to one Google search, the average American spends $1,850 annually on ordered food delivery. That’s about 2.5% of the average household income which feels… significant.

I do well for myself, but still struggle to order anything through DoorDash or Uber Eats because I know the fees they tack on are crazy expensive. For someone on a tighter budget, these fees are even more painful.

This got me thinking about buy now pay later services and ways a company like DoorDash might try to “help” their customers. One can imagine an upsell for a buy now pay later service like Affirm being programmatically shown depending on how much of your income an order costs (let’s say if it’s anything over 10%).

There’s technically a world where you could argue this is a helpful experience, but it reads as adding insult to injury when you are placing an order from your neighborhood fried chicken joint. A few years ago there was a meme about financing a pizza from Domino’s and in some ways this feels like an elevated version of that.
