Gmail Average Response Time

Velocity's the name of the game

In the last few years, my inbox has become more difficult to manage. However, I now have a solid team around me, which has alleviated some of the pressures I experienced last year. I have noticed that my response time is either instantaneous or like 6 days later. I think that’s just the byproduct of ruthless prioritization. Who knows.

Email is an interesting beast. What’s more interesting is watching corporate comms evolve as tools like Slack become more robust and almost function as a proxy for email. This got me thinking… What if there were a badge that showed your average email response time? It brings me back to the email game, which was unfortunately sunset a few years ago. This feels like a relatively small change but could make a sizeable impact on how people behave (they’d likely be incentivized by this badge).

The thing this doesn’t account for is quality. Some people are good at email; many are not. I can imagine a world where people are rapidly firing crappy messages back and forth to speed things up, but ultimately delaying work overall because faster doesn’t always equate to better.
