Google Chrome pay per tab

It pays to be organized

During my time working in big tech, there were times when I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after seeing the number of tabs someone had opened when they shared their screen.

I think I’m a pretty productive guy who spins many plates. However, this doesn’t mean I have hundreds (or even dozens) of tabs open. This is likely a symptom of my resistance to organizing large amounts of information on my computer. This sentiment can be summed up with an out-of-context quote from Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri of The Sopranos, “I don’t write nothin down, so I’ll keep this short and sweet.”

I typically have less than 10 (maybe less than 5) tabs open on my phone. I sometimes use one tab and forget where I’ve been, blissfully unaware of the past. I don’t even use bookmarks, why am I like this?

Anyways, you aren’t reading this to learn about how unhinged I am. However, this all got me thinking about how many tabs most people have open.

What if, after some arbitrary number, Google Chrome mad tabs became a paid feature? Forcing a tab limit would upset a lot of people, and I’m not sure there’s a defensible reason to launch something like this apart from fighting the natural organizational chaos that stems from life online. Still, a fun idea.
