Google Chrome wanted posters
Bringing the wild west online
Yesterday was full of highs and lows. The highs included getting to spend time with my in-laws celebrating our family Christmas. It was fun! I’m an uncle to a bunch of kids now which makes the holidays far cuter than they used to be.
The not-so-fun part was that I got hacked, again. I had 2FA through my phone set up, but I did not get any notification of a suspicious login or a notification to my phone with the auth code. After some sleuthing, my guess is that this means I am the victim of either a session hijack or a cookie grab. I’ve since factory reset my devices (that’s part of why today’s newsletter is delayed).
Being on the receiving end of a targeted attack like this got me thinking… I really want to know who is responsible for this, and I’d like to put a stop to them. To that end… what if we digitally recreated a design pattern from the wild west in the United States and prominently displayed wanted posters when we go online?
There’s actually something interesting here if there was a bounty-based system. No, I’m not going to pay $2.5M out of my own pocket to find these people, but I’m sure some people would love to put out a reward if they were the victim of a crime whether it’s digital or physical.
Aesthetically this idea is pretty unhinged, but I think there’s utility to it.
