Google Docs work buddy
Get help staying on track

In the last decade, the idea of real-time collaboration has rapidly made its way into the workforce. Sometimes I look back on the days when you could just sit and… work for a few hours, uninterrupted, and wonder where it all went wrong. Yes, we’re more connected, but sometimes I wonder if that ends up compromising the work instead of galvanizing it. Regardless, this way of working is here to stay, especially for designers.
As I spend more time in other products (looking at you, Google Docs) I begin to have new unhinged ideas. What if, in addition to the real-time collaboration Google Docs already supports, a random coworker was appointed you “work buddy” and received regular updates on your progress and whether or not you are still typing?
Yes, theoretically, this type of software already exists in certain jobs (such as call centers), but this has a uniquely diabolical feeling in environments that require more time and intense thought. I can’t imagine anyone finding true value in this expereince, though it would be entertaining, at least for a short while.
