Google Maps arrest speeders
Slow down there bud

One of the most shocking things when I first moved to Southern California was the complete disregard for the speed limit. Traffic is this living and breathing organism, and people sort of just drive with the flow. This leads to people regularly driving 10 to 15 miles per hour over the speed limit (unless there’s a slowdown for some reason). This is great on the freeways but the second-order effect is people on side streets who drive like maniacs.
This got me thinking. Google Map already does a semi-decent job of showing people what the speed limit is. What if we took that step further and automatically called the cops on people after they exceed the speed limit for a set amount of time? Users would riot, but one could argue the roads would be “safer”.
I, for one, don’t like the idea of artificially throttling how fast someone can drive. We’re all adults here (well I guess some of us are teenagers on the road), and people should be able to make rationale decisions about driving speed. However, you’re only as strong as your weakest link. Regardless, there’s no way Google is going to nark on their user base like this.
