Google Maps redirect all upcoming traffic

For when you're in a big hurry

A few months ago I was going to visit a friend. Google Maps said it would take less than 15 minutes to get to their house. I got on the road and this was still the projected trip time.

Then I got on the 5 (a large freeway in Southern California). An accident had occurred and I ended up waiting in gridlock for over half an hour. Not too bad in the grand scheme of things but still frustrating since all the cars were being directed to drive through one lane.

This got me thinking about how one might monetize the Google Maps app while also reducing someone’s trip time. It’d be expensive, but what if there was an option to pay to redirect upcoming traffic to reduce your trip time?

There are a million logistics questions this concept opens up. Who redirects the traffic? What happens to their projected ETA? Can I counter the redirect offer if I too am in a hurry?

If this somehow did make its way into the world, I could see the wealthiest people just paying to reroute traffic all the time.
