Google Meet encourages you to speak up
Why are you hovering over the unmute button?
There’s a weird unspoken etiquette in corporate culture. You let someone talk and usually stay muted until you have something to say. They also now have the feature to raise your hand which is cool, except for the fact that it makes a sound when you do. This feels quite disruptive.
I’ve observed that some people are more willing to speak up in meetings than others. To be fair, this is an extension of how real life works, but I wonder at times how many people are hovering over their unmute button waiting to say something.
What if Google Meet notified you when someone’s been hovering over their unmute button for a while? Likely this person either likes to live life on the edge or has something to say.
Either way, this feature would be anxiety-inducing for people who are already shy and could create some awkward moments since people aren’t aware their mouse activity is being surfaced to other people on the call.
