Google Meeting interrupters jail

One of the worst byproducts of remote work culture is how often people cut each other off when talking. It’s the worst. Thankfully, Google Meet now has a feature where you can raise your hand, but that’s only helpful if people are willing to abide by the cultural norm of raising their hands. Spoiler alert: many people aren’t.

This is annoying on many levels, and it makes me wonder what it would look like if you could punish people who talk out of turn. You can imagine a “meeting jail” feature where people are placed behind bars and unable to speak until a certain amount of time has elapsed (different punishments would be doled out for different offenses, obviously).

A feature like this would not work if it was user-initiated. Moderating a meeting sucks and if you put someone in meeting jail they would 100% hold it against you. That said, maybe if this would be administered automatically by the meeting itself people would be less likely to interrupt. Who’s to say?
