Monetizing valuable real estate
Sometimes I think I orchestrated my entire career around not using word processing apps or programs like Excel as much as possible. Pretty much the whole Google suite of products is SO boring. I understand these tools are powerful in the hands of people who know how to use them, but I have a primitive understanding at best.
I do know how flexible programs like Google Sheets are. You can do a lot of cool stuff with them like tracking profit and loss, monitoring resourcing, and forecasting revenue. I'm sure there’s a lot more you can do, but it’s beyond my skill level.
It’s shocking to me that tools like this are free. If you take a step back, it’s amazing to consider how much you can accomplish by using free programs from around the internet.
This got me thinking… what if there was a way to monetize Google Sheets? You could imagine a feature where after a certain amount of rows or columns, there’s a break for banner ads.
Given how long these apps have been free, I can imagine the public outcry that would arise if Google started inserting ads into this experience. However, given the number of people that use Sheets, the short-term revenue boost would be enormous. However, given the number of competitors, there’s no way they’d do this unless all the apps did it at once.
