Hulu ads sacrificial lamb
For the greater good

The Bear, season 4, is now out on Hulu. This caused me to re-engage with their platform after being disinterested for months (I’m somewhat curious about this new Alien show as well). Part of my beef with Hulu is that the volume of the show is normal, and when it cuts to an ad break, the audio gets REALLY, REALLY LOUD. I’m sure this is somewhat intentional, but it’s such a seismic shift that I typically mute my TV entirely.
This got me thinking about how annoying ads are for most users on the platform. What if, instead of evenly dispersing ads across their user base, certain people became “sacrificial lambs” for a month and had to watch only ads?
I can imagine this being infuriating for people who are impacted, and liberating for people who are unchained from the shackles of advertising. I don’t see a world where this exists (people would churn if they were served a steady stream of ads), but it’s fun to imagine.
