iMessage fact check feature

When your smart phone gets a lil too smart

Twitter used to have an awesome product. In the last few years as they’ve shed many of their designers the core product still works okay… but there hasn’t been much in terms of net-new feature development. I will say one of the things that they’ve continued to invest in is the Community Notes feature. It’s a cool way for the community to be able to fact check each other.

This feature has made its way into other apps in one way or another. Instagram and YouTube both have been affordances for misinformation, though to be fair those are typically controlled by internal teams rather than it being a community effort.

This got me thinking about more 1:1 apps like iMessage. What if there was a way to “fact check” the person you were speaking with? You can imagine a world where someone isn’t able to make excuses or double back on things they said as easily.

This would likely 1) be wildly inaccurate because it can’t account for real life interactions and 2) frustrate and ruin a lot of friendships.

It’d be entertaining to see this go live, but it’d likely cause a lot of strife and not be very useful.
