iMessage Polygraph Feature

Forcing honesty in text conversations

If you’ve watched any true crime shows or documentaries on criminals, you’re familiar with the polygraph test. You’re also probably aware of how inaccurate these tests tend to be. People who are innocent might fail a polygraph test if they get nervous, while a sociopath could fake being cool, calm, and collected.

This technology generally hasn’t translated to the digital realm. However, we now have detailed insight into people’s heart rates as well as face and eye tracking. Between heart rate fluctuations and eye movement, there are some verbal tells our devices could pick up to indicate if someone is lying.

What if we ported this functionality into iMessage? From little white lies about your ETA to massive conversations you might be avoiding, this would expose a lot of people in both one on one and group settings.

It would also erode trust without providing that much value, as the MVP would likely be pretty inaccurate. Regardless, it’s an interesting thought exercise.
