Stay engaged even though you aren't

Back in its heyday, Instagram was an endless feed of “inspirational” content and people showing off cool photos. Over time, it became a bit of an echo chamber for influencers, and people stopped posting content on their feeds (though some people still do). Seems like most activity these days happens on stories, which has interesting implications when we think about how much of our lives are being temporarily documented and then lost, but I digress.

Another interesting feature was the “You’re all caught up” banner that is shown when you reach the end of new content on your Instagram page. It’s sort of helpful, though I’d be curious to see the data behind how it impacts people’s behavior and if they still mindlessly open the app.

If you don’t check the app for a while, there can be a lot to catch up on. What if there was some sort of “inbox zero” feature for social media feeds? You could simply tap a button and like all posts that were made since you last opened the app (limited to the account you follow obviously).

This would give off the perception of engagement, but you wouldn’t actually know what’s going on. More chaotic than useful, but still interesting to think about.
