Instagram organic followers disclosure
See how popular they really are
Building a large following on the internet is one way to build a career. That being said, you need to follow it up by building businesses otherwise your earning potential is pretty much capped by sponsored posts. From my experience over the last year, good partnerships are very, very rare.
The competition to build an online following, especially if you are starting from zero is quite stiff. Even once you get into niches like design, there are a lot of people doing pretty interesting stuff.
That said, you can always cheat the system by purchasing followers. This isn’t without consequences, but if I remember correctly I semi-recently saw an instance of a woman who purchased followers and positioned herself as an influencer. She was able to subsidize many vacations to luxury hotels and destinations as a result. Wild if true.
To combat these instances of illegitimate followings, what if Instagram could determine what % of your audience is “organic”? The potentially billion-dollar question here is, “What is organic”? If a feature like this existed, many popular influencers would be caught like a deer in the headlights. I’m sure everyone has some percentage of their following that is made up of bots, but it’s definitely more pronounced with certain people.
