iThinkPad™

In collab with @0xgaut

Good morning and happy Wednesday.

Existing subscribers may notice a slight change in the UI of this newsletter. That's because I made the switch from Substack to Beehiiv. Don't worry, this won't affect you at all, and previous posts can still be viewed here.

Now, on today's idea: iThinkPad™

As someone who uses a combination of both trackpads and a mouse for Mac, I like to think I'm open minded. However I remember using my dad's laptop to play pinball and minesweeper as a kid. The little red nub thing was the worst.

Apparently the technical term for this nub is the TrackPoint from ThinkPad.

A few days ago while talking with 0xgaut we were going back and forth collaborating on fun yet infuriating hardware ideas. We initially riffed on the Apple mouse that you have to turn upside-down to charge (what if that was true of a MacBook?), but eventually we landed on taking the TrackPoint and adding it to a MacBook pro keyboard in addition to the trackpad.

You can imagine a world where you try to navigate with the trackpoint but keep accidentally nudging the trackpad. Truly infuriating.

Do you use a TrackPoint? If so, explain yourself.

People who like design concepts like this should slam that subscribe button.

You’ll get new ideas in your inbox every morning.
