LinkedIn coworker score

Social capital that actually matters

I attended a bachelor party last weekend and reconnected with some people I hadn’t seen since high school. When we first caught up, they all asked… “what exactly do you… do?” It’s a fair question, as the unindoctrinated would think that I’m simply going insane making memes daily for no other reason than the fun of it. Boy are they wrong.

This got me thinking about LinkedIn and reminded me of my time working at a larger company. During this season of my life, I was often frustrated by coworkers who were unreliable or flat-out impossible to get ahold of. So many deadlines were missed because of weak links.

Coworkers are typically aware of their peer’s abilities, be it implicit or explicit. Yes, eventually these issues bubble up to the surface and result in disciplinary action or dismissable, but sometimes this reputation can live on for years before something finally breaks the camel’s proverbial back.

To that end, what if you could assign coworkers a “score” on LinkedIn? Anyone could assign a score to their peers, and the average number would be publicly displayed on someone’s profile.

I have an unfounded hypothesis that many LinkedIn influencers would suffer if this were to go live. At the very least, it would create a lot of spice at large companies.
