LinkedIn real-time PTO deduction
Maximizing worker productivity, one scroll at a time
Having worked a W2 job for most of my career (until 2 months ago), I got used to having a dedicated amount of time off every year. Then I worked in big tech and got spoiled with an unlimited PTO policy. In retrospect, I probably didn’t take enough advantage of this opportunity, and it’s increasingly looking like my next vacation will happen when I’m dead (joking, sortof).
Anyways, one of the biggest adjustments you have to make when going from working for someone else to working for yourself is your perception of time. I’ve always viewed time as a precious asset, but once you have to run the show you quickly realize that literally every second counts, especially if you want to grow a business beyond yourself.
This got me thinking about the few times where I use social media during the workday. I do get paid at times for using social, but let’s be real, I know the difference between work and mindless scrolling.
I was thinking about what would stop the average person from getting sucked into a platform like LinkedIn. What if you integrated with their HR and payroll software so that if they spend time on the app during the workday, it is deducted from their accrued PTO? I can’t think of anything to tank engagement faster. People would leave in droves. However, recruiters would be toast, as they have to use the app to find new talent.
Horrible feature, but a fun thought exercise.
