Netflix battery tradeoff

When I’m not trying to design 800 different things for my agency, I do enjoy a show from time to time. There’s a Netflix show on the Menendez brothers that has taken the cultural zeitgeist this week, as it’s 1) a wild story 2) not all based in fact 3) made by a controversial director and 4) just generally a gnarly subject.

This isn’t a pop culture newsletter. I probably have bad taste in shows so I’m not going to subject you to my opinions, or a giant essay on why The Sopranos is the best show ever made (even though it is!).

I was flying last week and desperately tried to download a show before my flight took off. My phone was on the verge of dying because I’m chaotic and never charge it, but it got me thinking about tradeoffs…

What if there was an option to download a show instantly, but it took away a certain % of your battery life?

This would introduce a whole new level of calculus as people travel. It’d also likely be a temporary boost for battery extension product lines, as people would bring portable chargers if it meant they could watch more shows.

This is one of my ideas that feels more interesting/thought-provoking than unhinged, but I’m not going to put in the “work” to make it more insane.
