Netflix free plan

It's called "paying attention" for a reason

I used to love Netflix. I remember the early days when they literally mailed DVDs to your house. From there, I discovered Lost, Dexter, House, and so many other prestige TV shows on the platform; it was amazing. However, in recent years, their content has started to degrade. Lately it feels like a glut of reality garbage that I don’t have much interest in (if you like Love Island, no shade, it’s just not my cup of tea).

As the platform matures, so does the pricing. It’s never been more expensive to enjoy Netflix without ads. This got me thinking… what if there was a truly “free” tier? I can imagine an experience where you get absolutely clobbered with ads and there’s a banner you can’t delete, but it’s free.

This is interesting because I could see it being a strong way to collect more top of funnel, but the amount of ads you’d need to shove in to make it make sense would likely alienate most potential viewers. A lot of smart people work at Netflix, I’m sure there’s a reason why they haven’t done this.
