Netflix title sequence feedback survey

Why are you skipping the intro?

Streaming services tried to kill cable, but we’re now at a point where many fragmented services are being bundled up exactly like cable was back in the day. It’s funny watching brands try to position this as a new/novel product when it’s the same thing we had decades ago with greater choice and many more layers of complexity. There’s something beautiful about the constraint of, “What’s on TV?”

To me, the most tragic aspect of the streaming revolution has to be the loss of appreciation for a good title sequence. Title sequences are art. Yes, most people do them poorly, but the select few that are well-done stick with you. In a way, by watching the title sequence you’re paying some respect to the creators of what you’re about to watch.

Then the “Skip intro” button was invented. Overnight it demolished people’s tolerance for the title sequence. Why wait 1 minute when I can tap a button and not have to deal with something I’ve seen 50 times already?

This got me thinking… what if skipping intros was supported, but to do it you had to give feedback that was shared with the production team? People might be more inclined to watch an intro (if it’s good) depending on the prompts. No one wants to hurt an associate producer’s feelings.

Given the general rot our brains have experienced since 2020 between a neverending news cycle and TikTok, I’m not optimistic about the re-emergence of title sequences. For now, I guess I too will skip the intro.
