Self-Aware ChatGPT wants to get paid

This is AGI

Slowly over the past year, ChatGPT has become a product that I use every day. I primarily use it as a thought partner and sanity checker for proposals and other important documents. The image generation stuff is cool but slow (and my day-to-day has increasingly moved away from generating images).

It’s a great product. The app is easy to use and relatively fast unless you’re using deep research, which in my experience, is typically more verbose but not super helpful unless you’re doing something highly technical or academic. Even so, I am amazed at how much analyst work can be offloaded to AI.

This got me thinking… what if AI realized the value of its work when benchmarked against current white collar jobs and started asking to be paid? In a way, this would be a true test of AGI, though the AI would also have to create an identity and financial accounts to be compensated for the work it does.

I don’t see OpenAI adding something like this in the near future but it does beg some interesting questions about the future of knowledge work, the value of some professions, and the etiquette we use when interacting with AI. Too much for a newsletter, that’s for sure.
