Snap Map Chinese Spy Balloon
Design concepts meet current events
Happy Sunday!
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you heard about the Chinese Spy Balloon seen flying over the US. I wasn’t following this too closely, but it got shot down yesterday.
It’s funny to me we collectively freaked out about a balloon. Yet we’re fine with the fact that a Chinese owned technology company has the attention of American youth for a large part of any given day (TikTok). Guess that’s another story for another day.
Instead I’d like to focus on the idea that popped into my head:
Snap Map Chinese spy balloon
Now, I haven’t used Snapchat in a long time, but their Snap Map is a really fun piece of tech. You can see your friends location and their lil Bitmojis all over the world.
What if they extended this software to current events and tracked things like the Chinese Spy Balloon in the app?
There’s something undeniably fun and disarming about taking what is a very poorly defined and ominous balloon into a cartoony shape. This one was really quick to design. I just took a screenshot from Google of a Snap Map, made the little illustrated ballon and voilà, you can see the balloon traveling across the US.
