A special version of Duolingo friends quest

Today’s newsletter was created in partnership with your favorite bird (owl?). I'm lucky to once again partner with Duolingo.

Duolingo is fun as a single-player experience. Now, they have a multiplayer mode where you can go on quests with friends. I’ve heard of people getting paired with friends, friends parents, and even their exes. The meme of getting paired on Duolingo with your ex made the rounds a while back on TikTok, and I chatted with the Duolingo team to think about what might happen if this was made a core part of the app experience.

You can imagine getting a push notification for your friends quest, but you see a lil’ picture of your ex and maybe a reminder about your relationship. How Duo would know this information is a bit creepy, but to take things further you can imagine the “friends quest” section being renamed to “friends with benefits quest”. While most large products are no stranger to expanding their offering to appeal to new markets, I do think this might be a bridge too far.
