Spotify Christmas cap

Too much of a good thing is still too much

Christmas music is fine. I like it sometimes, other times it’s super annoying. It’s generally a good thing, but like all good things in this life, you can have too much of it. There are many people (especially retail workers) that are likely mainlining Christmas music right now and want a break.

This got me thinking, what if Spotify set individual caps on Christmas songs and didn’t let you listen after that? This would obviously annoy people but it may also function as a discovery metric (ie a forcing function to try other music), which could be a net positive.

Spotify has absolutely 0 reason to do this. Also, they likely don’t have that many people listening to a song 10,000 times, but then again, who knows? I’ve probably listened to a few songs that many times, and some people do fixate.
