Spotify cumbersome progress indicator
Encouraging you to enjoy the whole song (or play a game)
Spotify is an amazing product. Finding songs, audiobooks, and podcasts you like has never been easier. That said, it’s frustrating that instead of encouraging you to find new music, it will play the same song over, and over, and over again. However, that’s a pain point for another day.
Yesterday I drove a fair amount to get coffee with someone, pick up some merch, get brunch with people, and then hang out with family. Throughout this time I was either listening to music or a podcast. Most of the time I just hit play on something and let it ride. Sometimes I want to scroll to a specific part of a song. When this happens, it’s easy to tap, hold, and drag to a timestamp within a song.
What if Spotify heavily incentivized you to listen to an entire song? Rather than a simple progress indicator, there could be a maze that you’d have to drag the dot through, almost like a maze. On one hand, this might encourage people to treat Spotify like a game rather than a music player. At the same time, it’d likely result in car accidents for drivers who want to find a specific part of a song.
There isn’t much here in terms of redemption features, though it would be a fun and unexpected way to engage with a song.
