Spotify gatekeep music

For my ears only

I played a show with my band this past weekend. Every time I go to a local show, I’m reminded how seriously some people take the music scene and more importantly, the music they listen to. As someone who can listen to Slayer, Sabrina Carpenter, Johnny Cash, and Weird Al in the same day, I struggle to relate.

A strange phenomenon in the music and food scene is the concept of gatekeeping. People will actively hide music from other people to be “cool”. This got me thinking… what if there was a way to do this within Spotify’s platform? Tastemakers could identify and hide songs or albums their friends haven’t heard.

There’s no real point to this. It would simply exacerbate the problem of people listening to the same songs over and over again.

I don’t like gatekeeping generally, so I wouldn’t use this feature, but I know for sure some of my friends would.
