Geo-fence the holidays
The holiday spirit started creeping into the cultural zeitgeist after Halloween. Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s all-encompassing. Ads, music, decorations, and even outfits. People are pulling out all the stops, especially since the distance between Thanksgiving and Christmas is shorter than usual this year.
One particularly noticeable side effect is the inescapable sound of Christmas music. Stores, coffee shops, and even airports are pumping holiday cheer through the sound waves.
I don’t mind a small amount of tasteful Christmas music, but by the time December 25th rolls around I’m usually ready for it to be over. During the middle of December, sometimes you just want to take a break.
This got me thinking about Spotify… what if there was an option to geo-fence what people can listen to? You could set up a perimeter up to 5 miles that prohibits Christmas music for a set amount of time. This could be available to premium users or it could be a paid one-time upsell.
The interesting thing is that this feature is not necessarily exclusive to a specific genre. You could see people wanting to block any type of music due to annoying neighbors, stores that lack musical taster, or any number of other reasons.
This would be wildly unpopular, but might also be a moneymaker for Spotify.
