Spotify "music taste score"

Can you imagine?

Music has long been a love of mine. Much like visual art, it’s incredible to see the range of human expression that’s possible with sound, different instruments, and computers. From rap to hardcore to j-pop to original soundtracks to classic rock, it will never cease to amaze me how much range humans have. I love aspects of pretty much every genre. With the variance in music available, it’s interesting to consider how we perceive some people as having “good” and “bad” taste in music.

This got me thinking… what if Spotify scored your music taste? This would 100% go viral as people would be very happy or very upset depending on their score. Also, there would be a worldwide debate about what it means to “have good taste”. Who determines what good is? Are they financially incentivized in any way?

I can see why Spotify would never launch a tool like this, but at the same time the idea of quantifying and scoring taste is super interesting to me. There’s interesting product constructs that could be created around musical “tastemakers” much like platforms like Pinterst. One could argue playlists already do this, but the mechanic is relatively simple and underdeveloped compared to the rest of the product. Food for thought I guess.
