Starbucks “Behind the Beans”

See who picked the beans for your latte

gm and happy Saturday.

This morning I find myself enjoying the sugary goodness of a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato, a truly delicious creation. It’s my guilty pleasure, what can I say?

This is old news at this point, but Starbucks in the last few years has faced increasing pressure from employees attempting to unionize. I haven’t followed it too closely but the baristas getting paid more made me wonder… how much do the people picking the beans get paid?

Finding accurate information was hard, though one site did say they pay farmers in Ethiopia $0.24 per day which is substantially below a living wage of $1.90.

So maybe we help increase transparency by adding a segment on the product page where you see who’s really making your cheap coffee possible.

This is much an “unhinged” idea as it is a clarification of the usage of offshore talent. It’ll never ship but it’d turn some heads if it did.
