Tariffs in iMessage

Capitalizing on current events

Last week it was announced that the US will impose enormous automobile tariffs. The result was swift, people are flooding to dealerships before price hikes inevitably come for different types of cars.

I’ve been driving the same Honda Accord since 2017. I love it, and it’s proven to be a consistent, reliable vehicle with relatively few maintenance issues. I don’t think I’ll change cars any time soon.

The tariffs did get me thinking about how globally connected most of us are. What if the policies invoked on physical products made their way to the digital world? You can imagine a scenario where apps like iMessage impose a small tariff on messages that go in or out of the US.

People would love their minds if this went into effect. It would also have enormous negative impacts on smaller consumer social media applications. I see no reason to do this, but as a thought exercise, it’s interesting.
