Tinder "Family Filter"

To get coffee you must... get coffee with the family

It’s no secret that the dating world is tough. Recently, Bumble rolled out a feature for women to set prompts people have to answer for a chance at dating them. This is a fascinating attempt at solving the problem of a dating pool that is predominantly male (at least on the apps). At the same time, it feels a bit demoralizing to have to fill out prompts and do homework to have a shot at speaking to the person.

Regardless, I don’t have to worry about this, because I’m off the market. The feature did get me thinking about other ways to introduce friction into the dating process thoughtfully. In the past, I’ve designed concepts such as “Tinder call her dad to Super Like.” Today, there’s a new version of this: The Family Filter.

Some of us might not have a father figure present in our lives. Others might have a dad, but we don’t want them involved in our dating activity. With the family filter, you can choose who your potential match needs to spend time with before they meet you.

The feature itself is not unhinged. However, getting coffee with 5 different aunts feels like a lot of work (both emotionally and logistically). What if they live in another state? What if one of them is traveling? It creates a significant amount of work, but if they’re the one, it might be worth it.
