"Why can't you find a nice girl"

Dating culture has changed drastically in the last 20 years. If you zoom out, it’s also changed a lot in the last several hundred years. People used to get married primarily for functional (or at times, political) purposes. Yes, this still happens, but people often look for true love rather than a functional or transactional relationship. I’m not going to dive into the nuanced sociological factors driving these shifts. That’d be boring.

Instead, I’m going to focus on dating apps, like Tinder. Tinder allows you to swipe right on people you want to talk to. What if you needed parental approval for any match? Better yet, what if you could ask your other parent to approve if the first denied it?

This would be some parent’s dreams and some Tinder user’s worst nightmare. It might also disrupt otherwise functional relationships. Imagine if your dad approved a match with some girl your mom didn’t like or vice versa.

Thankfully, I have chill parents and my wife is awesome, so this isn’t an issue for me. Some of you, however…
