Tinder show credit card debt

True relational transparency

The average American carries an average debt of $23,317 (this number exceeds $100k if you include their mortgage). This is a lot of debt. The aggregate value of American debt continues to rise, but that is a problem that far exceeds the scope and substance of a satirical design newsletter.

This did get me thinking about other important decisions we make in life (like choosing a romantic partner). What if things like debt played a larger role in shaping these conversations? I can imagine an experience where Tinder shows the outstanding balance of credit card debt a potential match has.

This would be a fascinating exercise in human psychology. Some people who would be otherwise appealing might immediately be a hard pass, and vice versa. There’s a question around how superficial people are and their tolerance for financially suboptimal situations, but realistically, this is a decision everyone has to make for themselves. Probably best if this information isn’t readily available during the early stages of dating.
