Uber BYOV option

Bring your own vehicle!

Uber promised us a wonderful future of cheap ridesharing opportunities. While there are still some of those available, overall getting a ride is pretty expensive these days. A few days ago a 7-minute drive in Orange County was $25 on Lyft (it was over $50 on Uber).

As the product has scaled, so has the number of options when configuring your ride. You can get cars with extra legroom, and eco-friendly cars, or you can even bring a pet in certain vehicles. Given how much my dog hates the car this would be chaotic for everyone involved.

This all makes me wonder if affordability could be increased by supplying your vehicle for the ride. The complexity this introduces is twofold. First, your car probably isn’t always near you. That’s the whole point of ride-sharing. Second, the driver might have to travel a long distance to get to your car.

Looking at this concept. It’s a reframing of hiring a driver for the day (albeit a bit more economical than the traditional mode). This could be helpful in some ways, but hard to get people to buy in on this idea.
