Uber option to share food with your driver

Inspired by yesterday's events

Yesterday, I rode in a Waymo for the first time. If you’re not familiar with Waymo, it’s an autonomous version of Uber. I was expecting the fact that there was no driver to freak me out, but I found myself surprised by how normal the experience felt.

This was an interesting contrast with the Uber I took earlier in the day. My driver pulled up to the hotel, opened the door, and we were off. The car was filled with the aroma of buffalo chicken wings. After we were en route, unprompted, the driver asked if I wanted some of his wings. I politely declined.

He then asked how my day was. I said it was fine and enquired about his day. His day was going well, but he informed me that he was hungry before chomping into another wing.

Overall, it was a strange ride. The gears immediately started turning and I thought about how typically, if there was food in a car, the experience would likely be inverted. What if your driver could request that you share your food, if they detect that you have it?

Generally, I’m bad at sharing food, and I’d be even worse at it if I had to share with a stranger. Maybe it’s just me, but the idea of eating in a car with a stranger who you’re only going to see for 10 to 15 minutes feels wrong. However, I am going to be Ubering some later today, so maybe I’ll give it a shot.
