United Hold it and Save

Do you really gotta go?

I am emotionally and mentally preparing for the next few weeks, which involve virtually constant travel. It’s going to be exhausting, but a few fun things are happening, which makes it all worth it. Going to miss my family, though. Part of the run-up to any big travel run is the coordination of flights and hotels.

Flights are not cheap. With discount airlines like Spirit filing for bankruptcy, it looks like there are fewer options out there, in addition to the upcoming new features airlines are cooking up, like “standing seats”. This got me thinking about creative ways to save. What if airlines offered a discount if you avoided using the facilities during the flight? In theory, this leads to lower operational overhead, though I’d venture to guess the net gain here is nominal unless everyone on the plane abstained.

I could see discount airlines implementing this. In lower margin industries where every cent counts, this feels like a not unreasonable way to claw back a few pennies.
