United vote to open windows mid-flight

Saving the world, one retina at a time

Sleep on planes is truly elusive. This is especially true for those of us who are over six and a half feet tall. Often, I’ll toss and turn but eventually find a moderately comfortable position where I can kick back.

Sometimes these moments of rest mid-flight can be violently interrupted by someone who thinks it’s a good idea to unleash the full power of the sun into a completely dark airplane cabin. Yes, as a child I was undoubtedly the one who brought this retina-burning misfortune upon my fellow passengers, but as an adult, I try to never be that guy.

Opening a window when the cabin lights are off can be disruptive, to say the least. This got me thinking… what if there was a way to force accountability for keeping windows open or closed? Introducing: United option to vote on whether to open or close a window.

While this feature is arbitrary and difficult to enforce, pairing it with some sort of hardware solution or digital lock would make things very, very interesting. It would also help people who are just trying to get a little shut-eye on a plane.
