Beat the AI to keep your job

I don’t think anyone fully grasped the implications of AI when apps like ChatGPT started to hit the market. These apps in their infancy were quite primitive, but we’re now at a point where they’re becoming quite advanced. If you used Midjourney 2 years ago and try it today, it feels like a completely different product.

In a world where AI can do the easy tasks, the question of what humans will do becomes increasingly salient. My wife and I are rewatching Sopranos, and there was a scene where someone was talking about their job (not one of the mobsters) and I thought to myself, “that job is doable with a few queries on ChatGPT.”

I’m generally of the mind that AI cannot replace human creativity, but it can not only replace, but also do boring, repetitive work better than humans. The problem is that many leaders/people who are out of touch with the day-to-day have a hard time making a clear distinction between these things.

This got me thinking… what if platforms like Workday had a feature where it pitted you against an AI on menial tasks to keep your job? It feels like one of my darker ideas because it somewhat embodies what’s happening in the workforce today. The side effects of this in the short term might be a consolidation of talent and a rewriting of jobs (which to some extent, we’re seeing happen in the market now). Not exactly a fun Friday post, but the concept feels very close to reality.
