Workday out of office leaderboard

One of the big selling points for a lot of the big technology companies out there is the concept of “unlimited PTO”. Yes, you heard me right. Unlimited. The thing is, when you have an unlimited cap but no mandatory minimum a lot of people just end up not taking vacation, and if they do take time off they end up feeling bad about it.

This concept comes as I kick off my first big vacation for the year. I’m visiting Italy. As part of this process, I had to submit my time off to our workforce management tool, Workday.

Given that some people already feel bad about taking a vacation, I had the idea for a leaderboard that publicly shows how many days off you vs. the people around you have taken. This would be public-facing to employees and would likely make fewer people take vacation.

As I made this I got the sinking feeling that some permutation of this view probably exists on the admin side.
