Workday vote to keep or fire coworkers
The Purge: Work Edition

The economy is tightening a bit. This has been the case in the technology industry for the last few years. With the overall macro environment, it isn’t currently clear what the future holds. That said, more and more companies are shifting to a posture of “performance”.
This is a fancy way of saying if you suck at your job you can actually get fired. In the ZIRP era there was so much money sloshing around that large companies and tech more broadly were more focused on firing than hiring. That’s changed since COVID.
Many companies already have performance evaluations, but what if this were more of a Hunger Games-style experience where you got to vote on every employe,e and the decision to retain or fire was made based on public consensus?
To say this would breed a toxic culture is the understatement of the century. People would become feral and treat each other horribly. Would it be interesting as an experiment in a controlled environment? Yes. Should companies do this? No.
