Yelp for coworkers
How would you rate my performance?
Yelp is an interesting corner of the internet. You have some people who are self-proclaimed food critics writing detailed reviews of restaurants alongside unhinged people who just get mad when they have one bout of bad service at an otherwise perfectly good place. Also, you can use it to get quotes on anything from plumbing to landscaping. Pretty cool if you ask me.
The idea of a public review system is a very interesting model. Most big companies do some sort of performance review during the year at least once. This got me thinking… what if this information was all public?
To say this would be anxiety-inducing is an enormous understatement. At a large company, people could hide behind anonymity and sabotage other people’s careers. At a small company, this would be a breeding ground for toxic relationships.
If every single person in the workforce was rational, emotionally intelligent, and resilient to feedback, this system might work. Alas, we do not live in this type of world.
