Yelp reviewer show average tip
Put your mouth where your money is
Yelp is a special corner of the internet.
I used to use Yelp to find restaurants, but now I mainly use it to get quotes on lawn care and AC repair. Can't tell if the app is changing or I'm just getting older. Regardless, there are still a lot of people writing Yelp reviews. Many of these "food critics" have a lot to say about... pretty much everything.
A loose hypothesis I have is that the lower the review, the more likely this individual is to leave a low tip at the restaurant. My reason is that if someone is bold enough to bash a restaurant online, they'd probably stiff the waiter on their tip too. That said, this is purely anecdotal and I have no data to back it up.
It would be interesting if Yelp surfaced the average tip someone leaves at a restaurant near their name and the number of stars they gave a restaurant. I'd be curious to see how these contradict or coincide with each other. Also, if this info was public people would probably tip better overall (if point-of-sale apps don't force us to, that is).
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and happy Mothers Day!
